Lopez Gifted & Talented Program
The mission of the Lopez Gifted and Talented (GT) program is to maximize the potential of GT students by providing a program that matches their unique characteristics and needs through a challenging and accelerated curriculum.Support begins in the classroom for grades K–5, where all Lopez teachers are trained in differentiated instruction. This allows students to progress at a pace that fits their abilities, talents, and learning styles.
Academics
Gifted Language Arts students work with complex novels in a student-centered environment that encourages discussion around themes and key concepts. Gifted Math students work in groups in and outside of their homeroom classroom.
In 5th grade, GT students meet with the GT teacher for 30 minutes daily to explore advanced math concepts and projects.
At the end of 5th grade, students are assessed for eligibility in the Accelerated Math Program at middle school. Our daily WIN (What I Need) block provides GT and high-achieving students with 30 minutes of exploration and extension activities. Students use creativity and technology to deepen understanding and demonstrate learning through projects and presentations.
Social & Affective Needs
We support the social-emotional needs of gifted students through:
- Leader in Me curriculum and the 8 Habits
- Monthly meetings with the school counselor to focus on annual affective goals
- Skills for academic and social success during GT sessions
